TRAVEL AND FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY IMMERSION, LEFKADA
In Spring 2025, fellow travel journalist Kate Lough and I will be curating a small group of writers to join us on the Greek island of Lefkada for a photography retreat. With Greece as our muse, we will learn how to style, shoot and edit our own images with a professional Athens-based photographer — developing essential photography skills that are increasingly important in our role as writers.
Together with the photographer, we'll spend the mornings acquiring the necessary technical skills to create a foundation that we can later build on within our own practice. In the afternoons we’ll enjoy the food, landscapes and crystal clear, Ionian waters of Lefkada.
We’ll be staying in a new villa located high up in the hills of the island’s west coast. With impressive sunset views, generous communal spaces and beautiful light, it’s the ideal spot to base ourselves for this immersive photography course.
After our morning sessions, we’ll enjoy sun soaked lunches on the terrace before setting out to explore the island — and putting what we’ve learnt into practice.
Spring is the best season to visit the Ionian; and Lefkada — one of the greenest islands in Greece — is in full bloom at this time of year. Wildflowers burst from the roadside, the hum of honeybees provide a gentle soundtrack and ripe lemons hang heavy on their branches. The weather, a sweet 20-25 degrees, is perfect for the first swim of the season.
OUR MISSION
Over the past decade, photography skills have become increasingly essential in the field of travel and food writing. Beyond having a pretty Instagram account, photography has become a necessary part of the job. Being able to take a decent photograph to accompany your copy makes you a much more compelling commission to editors around the world. And helps pay the bills.
As well as being an opportunity to upskill, this is an eating holiday. There won’t be any yoga or mindfulness. There will be indulging, hiking, swimming and workshops that combine our love for travel, food and people. We hope there will also be dancing and a healthy amount of Greek wine…
